Slocum and the two Ruralists made their way toward the music. Their horses were already in the stable. The next thing to do was to look for Durango. Filled with concern for Magdellania’s safety in the hands of the bloody killer, Slocum’s boot heels hit the gritty ground as he hurried toward the Chinese lanterns.

“Ah, señor,” a slightly drunk señorita greeted him and swung on his arm. “What brings you to Arroyo?”

“A man with red hair. Tough looking.”

“Ah, you are too late. He left an hour ago.”

“She said he was here and left an hour ago,” he said to the others.

“Damn, I need some food and wine.” Miquel shook his head. “How far can he go?”

“Did he get fresh horses?” Slocum asked her.

“I guess so. He and his wife left here.”

“Was she all right?”

“I guess so. He got her drunk.”

Wife? He frowned at her words. “Why did he make her drink?”

“Cause, she was acting so stiff. No fun. You know. Come, all of you. Ruralists, we have food and wine.” She forced Slocum toward the table and other women brought some of the cooked steer on a platter.

“We have to eat them or they will die without rain, no?” the girl asked, pressing her rock-hard tit into Slocum’s arm as she straddled the bench beside him.

“How drunk was she?”

“Oh, a few drinks. She will enjoy her night. Will you?”

“It depends,” he said, realizing how hungry he had grown with only the pulcia to feed him for days. The mesquite-roasted meat was tough and stringy, but the flavor was mouthwatering. He set in to eat his full share and asked the woman about all she had seen and knew about the red-headed stranger while he fed himself. She helped him, pouring his wine and keeping his glass full.

He was busy eating his fill. But Magdellania was more on his mind than the attractive, dark-eyed woman who sat beside him. How far had he gone with her? They needed to capture him and do it quickly. How much had Durango forced her to drink?
